1. What Is a Pip? Measuring Price Increments in Forex

In foreign exchange (forex) trading, a "pip" — short for "Percentage in Point" or "Price Interest Point" — is the standardized unit used to measure the change in exchange rate value between two currencies. It represents the smallest conventional price movement in a standard currency quote.
For most major currency pairs (such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and AUD/USD), a pip corresponds to a change in the 4th decimal place (0.0001). For instance, if the EUR/USD exchange rate moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, the price has appreciated by exactly 1 pip.
The primary exception to the 4th decimal place rule occurs in Japanese Yen (JPY) currency pairs, such as USD/JPY or EUR/JPY. Because the Yen has a lower nominal unit value, a pip is measured at the 2nd decimal place (0.01). If USD/JPY moves from 150.25 to 150.26, it represents a 1-pip movement.
Fractional Pips (Pipettes): Modern MetaTrader 4/5 platforms quote prices to 5 decimal places (or 3 decimal places for JPY pairs). The 5th digit is called a Pipette (or fractional pip), equal to 1/10th of a standard pip.
2. What Is a Lot? Standard, Mini, Micro & Nano Volumes

While pips measure price movement distance, a "Lot" quantifies the trade volume or position size executed in the market. Because single currency units fluctuate by fractions of a cent, traders group currency units into standardized contract sizes called lots to generate meaningful financial returns.
- Standard Lot (1.00 Lot) — Represents 100,000 units of the base currency. On EUR/USD, 1 pip equals approximately $10.00 USD.
- Mini Lot (0.10 Lot) — Represents 10,000 units of the base currency. On EUR/USD, 1 pip equals approximately $1.00 USD.
- Micro Lot (0.01 Lot) — Represents 1,000 units of the base currency. On EUR/USD, 1 pip equals approximately $0.10 USD (10 cents).
- Nano Lot (0.001 Lot) — Offered by select retail brokers, representing 100 units of the base currency ($0.01 USD per pip).
Selecting the appropriate lot size allows traders to control their financial exposure. A 50-pip stop loss on a 1.00 Standard Lot equals a $500 risk, whereas the exact same 50-pip stop loss on a 0.01 Micro Lot equals just $5 risk.
3. How Pip Values Are Calculated (Math & Currency Conversions)
Understanding pip value mathematical formulas ensures traders accurately calculate potential profit and loss before placing live market orders.
When your account currency matches the quote currency of the pair (for example, a USD account trading EUR/USD), the pip value is constant per lot size: $10/pip for 1.00 lot, $1/pip for 0.10 lot, and $0.10/pip for 0.01 lot. When account base currency differs from the quote currency, apply the general formula:
// Universal Pip Value Calculation Formula
PipValueInAccountCurrency = (OnePipDecimal / CurrentExchangeRate) * TradeVolumeInBaseUnits * AccountExchangeRateFor example, if trading 1.00 Standard Lot (100,000 units) of USD/CAD when the exchange rate is 1.3500, 1 pip (0.0001 CAD) equals (0.0001 / 1.3500) * 100,000 = $7.41 USD per pip.
4. Dynamic Lot Sizing: Calculating Position Size Based on Risk %

Professional traders never use arbitrary fixed lot sizes. Instead, position size must adjust dynamically according to account equity and stop loss distance.
Define Equity Risk Percentage
Determine your max risk per trade (e.g. 1.5% of a $10,000 account balance = $150 maximum risk).
Measure Stop Loss Distance
Identify your structural stop loss level on the technical chart (e.g. 30 pips below market structure).
Calculate Maximum Pip Value Allowed
Divide your monetary risk by stop loss pips: $150 / 30 pips = $5.00 per pip maximum allowance.
Convert to Lot Size
Convert allowed pip value into lot units: $5.00 per pip on EUR/USD equals exactly 0.50 Mini Lots.
The Fixed-Lot Pitfall: Trading a fixed 1.00 lot regardless of stop-loss width means a 100-pip stop loss risks $1,000 (10% of equity), while a 20-pip stop loss risks only $200 (2%). Always scale lot size inversely with stop-loss distance!
5. Automating Pip & Lot Sizing with ArjunaFx EA
Manually calculating pip values and dynamic lot sizing during fast market conditions causes execution delays and calculation errors. ArjunaFx EA automates position sizing directly inside MetaTrader 4 and 5.

Leverage Buffer: Ensure your broker free margin remains above 300% to prevent unexpected margin calls during multi-grid order sequences.
6. Summary & Essential Rules for Pip and Lot Discipline
Mastering pips and lots transforms trading from gambling into a disciplined quantitative science.
- Pips measure price movement: 4th decimal place for standard pairs (0.0001), 2nd decimal place for JPY pairs (0.01).
- Lots quantify volume: 1.00 Standard ($10/pip), 0.10 Mini ($1/pip), 0.01 Micro ($0.10/pip).
- Dynamic lot sizing is mandatory: Always compute position size from fixed equity risk % and stop-loss distance.
